Valparaiso broker named to top 40 under 40 list

“Financial Planning” included one Region broker on its list of Top 40 Regional Brokers Under 40 in 2025. Albert Miller, 35, of Raymond James & Associates in Valparaiso, landed No. 14 for producing $2.5 million in annual revenue. The revenue total was from the 12-month period of Oct. 1, 2023, to Sept. 30, 2024. Raymond James also took top honors as having the most brokers on the list, with 15 honorees, an increase from 11 in 2024.
Wildcard surprise at Region 4 Innovate WithIN competition

While Ashton Verbish's Safety Glow continues to win awards, another team landed a first in STARTedUP history during the Region 4 Innovate WithIN pitch competition April 14. Septo, created by a team from Munster High School, earned a wildcard spot in the state finals. Usually, wildcard winners aren't announced until all six regional events are complete, but Septo's pitch was so strong that judges decided to give them a finalist slot.
Conexus Indiana appoints new president

Indianapolis-based Conexus Indiana named Jay Wirts president and CEO, effective April 14. Wirts succeeds Fred Cartwright, who retired at the end of 2024. Wirts brings over 20 years of executive leadership experience in the advanced manufacturing sector to his new role. “Jay’s extensive experience and passion for advancing industrial innovation make him an ideal leader for Conexus Indiana,” said Scott Brand, Conexus Indiana board of directors chair, in a press release.

The Crown Point Community Foundation Nonprofit Academy recently wrapped up its Beginner’s Guide to Grant Writing workshop. Representatives from the Purdue Extension led the two-part workshop. The initiative aimed to equip nonprofit professionals with the skills, knowledge and resources to amplify their impact. Vita Ayala, Powers Health Cancer Research Foundation/Cancer Resource Center project assistant, called the workshop a good way to take an entry level dive into grant writing.

Valparaiso University recently appointed Dr. Elizabeth Gmitter dean of the College of Nursing and Health Professions. Gmitter previously served as dean of the School of Health Sciences and Career Programs at Malcolm X College in Chicago. She led over 20 health care programs, including 12 with specialized accreditation. Gmitter expanded curriculum offerings, strengthened accreditation efforts and secured millions in funding to support workforce development.

Winfield to gain new water tank

Standing nearly 150 feet tall, the new concrete pedestal and steel water tank is near East 117th Ave. and Randolph St. The tank will increase water storage capacity, improve water pressure and enhance fire protection capabilities across the community.

Tiffany Blakemore, aka Vitamin “T”, founded Vitamin “T” Cycling and Fitness Studio in 2023. “I’ve always believed that fitness should be fun, challenging and for everybody,” Blakemore said in a press release.
