Along 26th Street in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood, Monday felt like an ordinary day. For many residents, that’s the problem. No floats, no parties, no revelers celebrating Cinco de Mayo, the annual Mexican tradition on May 5th. “It’s sad, it’s just sad,” Adriana Varona said, who set up a little stand on the back of her truck to sell brown eggs and honey to passersby on what was supposed to have been a huge celebration.

There was supposedly an issue with the pipes in his classroom at East Leyden High School in the northwest suburb of Franklin Park. But Gómez, 31, didn’t expect the band room to be filled with his family, state education leaders and a mariachi band, who were there to congratulate him on being named Teacher of the Year by the Illinois State Board of Education.
