State seeks OK to enforce immigration law

TALLAHASSEE — As legal wrangling continues in a lower court, Attorney General James Uthmeier’s office Wednesday asked a federal appeals court to at least temporarily allow the state to carry out a new law targeting undocumented immigrants who enter Florida. Uthmeier’s office filed a 34-page motion at the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals seeking a stay of a preliminary injunction issued last week by U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams that blocked enforcement of the law.
Committee formed to monitor school sales tax spending

An oversight committee made up of Marion County Public Schools parents and stakeholders has been formed to keep watch over how revenue from the district’s half-cent sales tax is being spent. The School Capital Outlay Surtax Oversight Committee held its first meeting on May 6 and will meet once a quarter going forward. The sales tax increase was approved by Marion County voters in the November 2024 general election and went into effect in January.
Historic Fessenden will continue operating as elementary school

Talks of closing the historic Fessenden Elementary School have been halted following community upheaval in support of the school to remain open. The Marion County School Board has agreed to take the closing of Fessenden Elementary and other north Marion County schools off the table, at least until the completion of the construction of a new Interstate 75 interchange and a Buc-ee’s superstore.

Florida gas prices up and down

Gasoline prices in Florida continue to fluctuate as typical seasonal increases have been offset by a drop in crude-oil costs. The AAA auto club said Florida motorists paid an average of $3.08 for a gallon of regular unleaded gas Monday, up 4 cents from a week earlier but down 12 cents from a month ago. AAA attributed prices to factors such as economic concerns and the decision by OPEC+ to increase output and add more oil to the market at a time of tepid demand.
Michigan leader sole pick for UF president

TALLAHASSEE — Santa Ono, who has led the University of Michigan since 2022, is the sole finalist to become president of the University of Florida, UF announced Sunday. A presidential-search committee recommended that the UF Board of Trustees approve Ono after a search that began last year following the abrupt resignation of former President Ben Sasse. Kent Fuchs, a former UF president, has served as interim president.
