Portland Timbers

The Portland Timbers are a professional soccer team located in Portland, Oregon. They participate in Major League Soccer (MLS) as part of the Western Conference. Since 2011, the Timbers have been playing their home matches at Providence Park, following their debut as an expansion team in the league. The club was established in 2009 after Portland received a spot in MLS. It is owned by Peregrine Sports, with Merritt Paulson as the majority owner. Paulson's companies took over the former USL Pro team in 2007 and later founded the Portland Thorns women's team in 2012. The Timbers represent a "phoenix club," being the fourth soccer franchise in Portland to adopt the Timbers name, which first appeared in 1975 with the original team in the North American Soccer League.
