North Manchester Golf Club has been given permission to bulldoze its current clubhouse, pro shop, function room and greenkeepers store. The new clubhouse with ‘four attractive arches’ will be rebuilt closer to the first tee. A reception, pro-shop, members’ bar and snooker room are to be created over three floors, alongside an event room with views overlooking the lake. The vacant space left by the demolished clubhouse will be taken up by 56 new homes.

The four-storey block of flats will be built off Earl Street, between Bethel Street and Taylor Street. The 23 flats will be a mix of studios, one-bedroom and two-bedrooms – four of which would be available for affordable rates. Affordable housing is where homes are marketed at a reduced rate (up to 80 per cent of market value). Being just a stone’s throw from Heywood town centre, the developer wants to put the vacant land to better use.

The council said that during investigations, it became clear that there was a crack along a 22-metre section a sewer pipe around three metres underground.

Ken Wright was dressed up in his blazer, adorned with military medals, as he took centre stage for Rochdale’s commemoration of Victory in Europe Day. The 102-year-old watched on as the Last Post was played, flags were raised and wreaths were laid in memory of his fellow brothers in arms. Ken served in the First Battalion Suffolk regiment in the 3rd British Infantry that landed on Sword Beach – but he is the last Rochdalian of them left.
