With Logan Couture stepping away from professional hockey, Marc-Edouard Vlasic is the only full-fledged member of the San Jose Sharks’ “golden age” remaining on the roster. The 38-year-old defenseman missed the majority of the 2024-25 season with an upper-body injury, however, appearing in just 27 games, going through a grueling rehab to make even that many appearances. Despite missing a considerable amount of time, it was a historic season for Vlasic.

It was a tale of two seasons for Will Smith. Before his homecoming on Jan. 20 to play the Boston Bruins, Smith had just six goals and 15 points in 40 games. That’s not bad for a 19-year-old in his rookie campaign, but it’s not what the San Jose Sharks’ 2023 fourth-overall pick, who had led the NCAA with 71 points in 41 games last season, was accustomed to. There are no days off for Macklin Celebrini. That’s hyperbole, of course, but it was striking to see Celebrini on the ice, a day after the end of the San Jose Sharks’ regular season. The only Sharks on the ice were Celebrini and Jack Thompson, who’s coming back from injury and ramping up to join the San Jose Barracuda in the playoffs. Of course, Celebrini still has his own hockey to play too: He confirmed what was a given, that he would be representing Team Canada at the World Championships.

Alexandar Georgiev is moving on. “I’ve already had a conversation with the GM, and he said they’re going with a different group for next year,” the pending UFA shared, after stopping 25-of-27 shots in the San Jose Sharks’ season-closing 3-0 loss to the Edmonton Oilers. It was the Sharks’ 11th-straight loss. Georgiev, 29, was acquired from the Colorado Avalanche in the Mackenzie Blackwood trade on Dec. 9. It was a trying campaign for Georgiev, who had led the NHL in wins over the last two years.

The San Jose Sharks welcome the Edmonton Oilers into SAP Center. The Sharks lost their 11th-straight game, getting shut out 3-0. Soft bounce exit pass by Vlasic that Eklund can skate into for counterattack. 5 in: Nice dipsy-doodle shift from Kovalenko and Gushchin. Not a backhanded compliment. They would be helped by a more offensive 3C, but Sharks don’t have a ton of options up the middle right.
