Silver City Daily Press

The Silver City Daily Press and Independent is a daily newspaper that is published five days a week for the Silver City community in New Mexico, USA. It was originally established in 1896 as the weekly Silver City Independent. The Ely family acquired the paper in 1934, and in 1935, Colonel Clyde Ely transformed it into a daily publication, renaming it the Silver City Daily Press and Independent. In recognition of its exceptional collaboration among members, the newspaper was honored with the Mark Twain Award by the New Mexico Associated Press Managing Editors in 2007. Following the economic downturn in 2008, the newspaper made several changes, including outsourcing its printing, eliminating the Saturday edition, enhancing its online presence, leaving the Associated Press, and joining an 11-member newspaper exchange in New Mexico. In April 2014, the Silver City Independent Publishing Company, LLC purchased the name, archives, and website of the Daily Press, marking a significant shift as it was the first ownership change away from the Ely family since it became a daily publication.
