Gabe Vasquez is demanding answers, and the area’s residents have made an offer to the Postal Service. The post office in Mule Creek was damaged on April 2, 2024, when a vehicle crashed into it, causing what the U.S. Postal Service said would be a temporary closure. Residents at first had to pick up their mail in Buckhorn, 18 miles away.

A community cooling center is now open in the downtown Silver City area, available to anyone who needs some respite from the heat. The center, at 215 W. College Ave., is operated by Silver City Street Outreach, and it is having a soft opening this week after passing its inspection by the town fire marshal Tuesday, said Brian Stengel, director of the nonprofit organization.

The GRMC board of trustees approved a contract with Robert Whitaker in a special meeting Monday afternoon, with the three-year agreement effective immediately. “I’m really grateful for our board and their trust in me and allowing me to lead this organization, this health system,” Whitaker said.

With the Paradise Fire nearly completely contained, command of the remaining firefighting efforts will transfer to a local team this morning, according to Monday’s update from the Gila National Forest. The fire, located about 13 miles south of Quemado, was 92 percent contained at 727 acres according to Monday morning’s update from Maribeth Pecotte, public information officer for the Gila National Forest. While still under investigation, the fire is believed to be human-caused.
