A long-delayed federal requirement for residents to possess a “Real ID” driver’s license in order to fly domestically or enter certain buildings will take effect on May 7, requiring some tri-state folks to make an appointment at their local department of motor vehicles. The federal rule was originally passed by Congress in 2005 as a way to standardize the information displayed on state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards.

The budget framework Congressional Republicans have developed — to cut taxes and federal spending enough to satisfy just enough of the majority party to skirt the U.S. Senate’s filibuster rule — eked out a vote in the U.S. House last week. The budget framework includes both an extension of President Donald Trump’s massive individual and corporate income tax cuts of 2017 and promises to substantially shrink federal spending.

Republican Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds announced Friday that she will not seek a third term in office. Reynolds, a Republican, has held the position since 2017, when former Gov. Terry Branstad was appointed U.S. ambassador to China. She was elected to full terms in 2018 and again in 2022. Reynolds’ announcement opens the door for a broad spectrum of political voices to seek the state’s highest seat, the power of which has broadened during Reynolds’ tenure.

Recent reports of opioid overdoses and methamphetamine usage is worrying Dubuque County health officials who are also concerned about the future availability of state and federal supports for drug users. Members of the Opioid Settlement Working Group of the Dubuque County Board of Health said during meetings this week that ongoing projects to protect local users of opioids are working well but added that uncertainties around funding are stressing those efforts.
