Mehlville BOE welcomes new members, reorganizes board

April 17, 2025 The Mehlville Board of Education approved and accepted the election of Ann Zimpfer and Serene Wilkinson, each to a three-year term on the Mehlville School District Board of Education, at its April 10 meeting. Before Zimpfer and Wilkinson took the oath of office, however, Scott Huegerich was recognized for serving as a board director for the past three years. The board highlighted Huegerich’s accomplishments over the past three years and each member said a few parting words.
Beasley Elementary School playground named in honor of ‘Mr. Mike’

After receiving requests from members of the community, the Mehlville Board of Education unanimously approved renaming Beasley Elementary School’s playground and field “The Mr. Mike playground and field” in honor of longtime custodian Mike Edwards. Edwards, known to students and staff as “Mr. Mike,” unexpectedly died in February. “Mr. Mike was not only a long-time resident of the Mehlville School District, but also a dedicated and beloved employee.

A number of elections – including fire, municipal andschool boards, as well as multiple local and county-wide propositions – were decided on April 8. Incumbent Chris Volz was defeated by Steve Davila for the open Affton Board of Directors seat by a vote of 55.6% to 44.4%. Mehlville Fire Protection District Board of Directors incumbent Ed Ryan secured his fourth term, defeating challengers Fred Baumgarth and Steven Mossotti.
Affton School District hires third school resource officer for 2025-26 school year

The Affton Board of Education unanimously approved the hiring of the district’s third school resource officer (SRO) for the 2025-26 school year at its April 1 meeting. The new SRO position is yet to be filled, though the district has already begun working with the St. Louis County Police Department to begin the selection and placement process. The position is expected to be occupied by the start of next school year.

This is incredible. You can tell I’m not used to such excitement,” MFPD Board Chairman Aaron Hilmer said in reaction to the six Oakville High School students in attendance.
Lutheran South baseball donates to Florida food pantry over spring break

During the school’s spring break, the Lutheran South High School baseball team traveled to St. Petersburg, Florida, for a tournament. While they competed fiercely – winning five of their seven games against teams from New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Illinois – what they accomplished was bigger than baseball. For the fifth year in a row, members of the Lutheran South baseball team purchased items for the Delores Food Pantry at Hope Lutheran Church.
Lindbergh water polo hosts multi-state match

Lindbergh faced off against Sycamore High School – an out-of-state team from Montgomery, Ohio – on April 5. The Flyers started the game off strong, dominating the first half, though this lead was rapidly lost in the second half due in large part to Sycamore’s goalie. The match ended in a 10-14 loss for LHS. In addition to Sycamore, Lindbergh played two matches against two Tennessee teams: Bluff City Water Polo and Nashville Water Polo. The Flyers won both matches, 12-7 and 16-3, respectively.

St. Simon the Apostle School to close after 2024-25 school year

St. Simon the Apostle School will close its doors following the 2024-25 school year due to declining enrollment. Down from previous years, the school’s current enrollment sits at approximately 123 students. This equates to roughly 13 or 14 students per grade as the school serves kindergarten through eighth grade. The projected enrollment for next school year saw a sharp decrease, with only 70 students expected to attend the Green Park school.
Lindbergh, Mehlville school board candidates share views, opinions at community forums

Mehlville’s forum, sponsored by Call Newspapers and the League of Women Voters, was held March 4, while Lindbergh’s, also sponsored by the League, was held March 10. The Mehlville Board of Education candidates for the April 8 school board election are Mick Johnson Jr., Megan Paule, Serene Wilkinson and Ann Zimpfer.
