    Elderly Koreans bought more cars than those in their 30s for the first time this year as demographics and their values shift. Over-65s bought 247,407 cars in the first 11 months of this year, while those in their 30s bought only 205,040. This is partly due to an aging population and the shrinking young population due to a persistently low birthrate.

    Korea has suffered a trade deficit with its biggest market China this year for the first time in 31 years. According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on Wednesday, Korea's exports to China totaled $114 billion in the first 11 months of this year, while imports amounted to $132 billion, resulting in an $18 billion deficit. The monthly trade balance began with a $3.9 billion deficit in January and stayed in the red since.

    Bibimbap, the Korean rice bowl with sautéed vegetables, chili paste and beef or other meat, was the most searched recipe on Google worldwide this year. Next came Spain's espeto or fish skewers and the Indonesian porridge called papeda. Bibimbap searches were particularly high in India, followed by Singapore, Sweden, the Philippines and Malaysia. The surge is probably due to the popularity of Korean TV dramas, which tend to feature a lot of eating.

    Korea has dramatically improved its readiness for the transition to electric vehicles. It jumped 10 places to become the eighth-most EV-ready country out of 40 countries in rankings by global market researcher Euromonitor International last week. Korea scored 60 points overall in the annual Electric Vehicle Readiness Index in four categories -- EV market maturity, infrastructure maturity, cost of ownership and consumer spending power.

    The prices of gasoline and diesel have dropped for the ninth consecutive week at Korea's gas stations. According to Korea National Oil Corporation on Sunday, gasoline prices fell W14.7 to W1,626.6 per liter in the first week of December while diesel fell W21.2 to W1,563.8 (US$1=W1,307).
