    Five freshwater lochs in the Highlands and Islands have been damaged by pollution from fish farms, according to a long-term scientific study by University College London. The study concludes that faecal waste and uneaten food dropped into the lochs from over 50 salmon and trout cages since the 1980s and 1990s is “highly likely” to have altered the water quality, risking algal blooms and posing dangers to wildlife.

    There have been 12 nuclear incidents that could have leaked radioactivity at the Faslane naval base since 2023, The Ferret can reveal. According to the Ministry of Defence (MoD), the incidents at the Clyde nuclear submarine base had “actual or high potential for radioactive release to the environment”.     Unions have called for urgent clarity from Edinburgh university after it published an “incorrect” memo that said the cash-strapped institution had purchased an iconic A-listed office block while it was laying off staff. An internal communication from the university to staff in late March – shared with The Ferret – said it had bought the former Scottish Widows building opposite Edinburgh’s Commonwealth swimming pool the previous month.
