Panola County, located next to Louisiana, spans 842 square miles of gently rolling hills and plains alongside the Sabine River. With a population of around 24,000 residents, the county boasts several freshwater lakes and a thriving oil and gas sector. The county seat, Carthage, has roughly 6,800 inhabitants and is known for the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame, which includes the Tex Ritter Museum. Just outside of Carthage lies the Jim Reeves Memorial, honoring two influential figures in country music: Jim Reeves, from the nearby area of Galloway, and Tex Ritter, who hailed from Murvaul. In addition to hosting annual induction ceremonies and concerts, Carthage is a hub for country and gospel music, featuring weekly Country Music Hayride performances at the historic Esquire Theater in downtown.

BECKVILLE — When Bethany Grandgeorge graduated last year, the question was who would be the recipient of the metaphoric torch as Panola County’s top softball player. Grandgeorge didn’t have to search far and wide — she didn’t even need to leave her house. Younger sister and Beckville junior Emily Grandgeorge has taken that torch and apparently lit her bat ablaze with it because she closed the regular season on absolute fire.

BECKVILLE — With a fourth-straight district title on the line, the Beckville Ladycats softball team did what they’ve done throughout District 23-2A play — the Ladycats dominated. Emily Grandgeorge continued her hot streak at the plate while throwing three no-hit innings, Landrie Dennard hit her first two home runs of the season and Brilee Brumely hit a two-run home run as Beckville mercy-ruled Overton 16-0 in a three-inning game for the programs fourth-straight district title on Thursday night.

CARTHAGE — Cade Ross was dialed in on the hill — and with solid run support was able to make it a one-sided affair. The Carthage junior pitcher threw a complete game three-hit shutout and Maddox Martinez went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and four RBIs as the Carthage Bulldogs baseball team blanked visiting Henderson 8-0 in a District 16-4A game on Tuesday at Bulldog Park. Ross allowed just one walk and struck out three in his complete game gem.

With ace Carson Wallace on the bump, Harleton dismantled Beckville 10-0 in four innings with dominant pitching and hitting. Harleton was not going to let Beckville come into their house and defeat them in any fashion. With the loss in their minds, the Wildcats came into the game determined to get revenge.

HARLETON — Emily Grandgeorge was simply her. The Beckville High junior softball player did it all against Harleton. Grandgeorge struck out a career high 16 batters in the circle and went 5-for-5 at the plate — also a career high for hits in a game — with a three-run home run, double, five RBIs and four runs scored as Beckville blew past host Harleton 13-1 in a District 19-2A game on Friday.

On Wednesday, April 9, the parking lot of the Panola College student center was lively with students and faculty hanging out, eating together and listening to live music at the Spring Fling. BECKVILLE — Beckville’s Aiden Brantley and Aiden Harris doubled up on district and area titles and Major Morris qualified for regionals in three individual events at the 2A District 23 and 24 Area Track and Field Championships on Thursday in Beckville. One week after capturing the District 23-2A 400-meter dash — for a fourth-straight year — Brantley was able to fend off some steep competition finishing in 52.14 holding off Gary’s Koby Bell who finished in 52.88.
