Third PlacesWhen social scientists mention a location that is separate from the home or the workplace, they traditionally use the term “third place.” It is an umbrella term that refers to any communal place where groups of people gather, often a café, marketplace, park, etc. Most sociologists accept that third places benefit communities greatly and are often paramount to cultivating civic engagement and a sense of belonging among the people who utilize the space.
