HB 36 to add nitrogen hypoxia as form of death penalty

House Bill 36, introduced in the Ohio Legislature by Republican Reps. Brian Stewart and Phil Plummer, proposes adding nitrogen hypoxia as a method of execution, replacing oxygen intake with pure odorless and colorless nitrous gas. Plummer and Stewart were not available for comment. Although Gov. Mike DeWine said no executions will occur during his time as governor, many have expressed worries due to his term ending in 2026, according to the Associated Press.

OU is home to truly some of the best people who also happen to be excellent journalism professionals. However, the leader among all of these is Eddith Dashiell, more commonly known as Dr. D. After 33 years of educating, serving and loving OU students, Dr. D. will enter a new chapter of her life: retirement.

The E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University condemned the Associated Press’s ban from the Oval Office and Air Force One in a statement released on Facebook Feb. 20. The ban from the Trump administration came after the AP refused to alter its style to reflect Executive Order 14172, in which President Donald Trump officially renamed the body of water bordering Mexico and the United States to the Gulf of America.

The sold-out crowd at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium was buzzing Thursday night with excited chatter and thrilling anticipation. Every seat in MemAud was filled with every patron waiting for one person: Brittany Broski. Hocking County Jail transforms into women's-only facility

The Hocking County Correctional Facility is currently being repurposed to serve as a women’s only jail and drug treatment center. The project has received support from numerous local organizations, including Ohio University, Hocking College and Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail. Organizing the contributions for OU is Assistant Clinical Professor Rick Hodges. “Ohio personnel coordinate the project and help to advocate for policy and funding support,” Hodges said.

Dear Editor,The overwhelming generosity of the people of Athens helped provide joy to children in need through Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts this season. Across the U.S., the Samaritan's Purse project collected 10.5 million shoebox gifts in 2024. Combined with those collected from partnering countries in 2024, the ministry is now sending over 11.9 million shoebox gifts to children worldwide.
Israel-Hamas ceasefire, hostage deal reached

A ceasefire and hostage deal between Israel and Hamas was agreed to Jan. 19, ending the 15-month-long conflict. According to the Associated Press, the deal is organized into three phases. As part of the first and current phase, Israel has begun to withdraw troops into a buffer zone 700 meters from the border and Hamas released 33 hostages in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. Phase 2 will begin Feb.
Fracking explosion in Guernsey County causes fire, raises safety concerns

A fracking well pad exploded and caught fire Jan. 2 in Antrim, Guernsey County. The fire reportedly started at around 5:30 p.m. and burned for 18 hours, stemming from a storage tank on site. The Guernsey County Dispatch received a 911 call at approximately 5:34 p.m. Upon arrival at the scene, Antrim Volunteer Fire Chief Donald Warnock’s team assessed the incident and made decisions about the best course of action. “First thing is we get eyes on it to see what's happened,” Warnock said.
