The Renegade Rip

The Renegade Rip, the student newspaper of Bakersfield College, has proudly served the community for 85 years, establishing itself as a leading publication among community colleges in California. Students are trained in professional journalism standards and take charge of the entire process of producing seven to eight issues every semester. In addition to their print editions, they also run a 24/7 online platform at therip.com and have launched five editions of the Dissenter magazine over the last four years.

The film stars Sofia Carson as Alex Rose, a young woman from New York whose life turned upside down after her mother passed. She was left with a list she made in her childhood and was challenged to complete everything in it in order to receive her inheritance from her mother.
“Withered” will have you withered

Artist D4vd released his second studio album “Withered” on April 25. With 15 songs-6 more than his last album; D4vd encapsulated the feeling of heartache and longing beautifully. Each song has its own identity that many artists fail to have these days. The album includes a feature from singer/songwriter, Kali Uchis in “Crashing.” This song is really the only one where love is reciprocated and where D4vd seems the most happiest.
A Minecraft Movie

After years of waiting, the game “Minecraft” finally came to life on the big screens and it’s a surprisingly fun adventure for fans and new people alike. The film was directed by Jared Hess, and it includes star actors like Jason Momoa as Gabriel the Warrior and Jack Black as Steve. The story follows three adults and one kid who were transported into the Minecraft world.
Vesna Duos Intimate Concert

A crowd of 26 people showed up for Thursday, March 27 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the BC Simonsen indoor theater for an intimate and haunting performance by pianist Liana Pailodze Harron and percussionist Ksenija Komljenovic. The concert was organized by the Performing Arts Department who gave them an opportunity to play their music through stories with different dynamics, which was an experiential performance. Even though they had a low attendance, the duo played with passion and energy.
Mickey 17: A Clone’s Dilemma

This film stars Robert Pattinson, best known for his role in “Twilight,” as Mickey, a worker on a spaceship who is cloned every time he dies. Local orchestras unite at BC to create harmony

The Bakersfield College Orchestra and the California State University Bakersfield (CSUB) Orchestra got together for a collaborative performance on Wednesday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the BC Indoor Theater. The concert also featured a guest performance from East Bakersfield High School, making it a special evening with all of the musical talent heard across different levels of experience.

McRae uses her emotional side to show vulnerability, growth, and the hardships of a relationship throughout a lot of her songs in “So Close to What.”Her vocals in the album are soft but strong at the same time.
Selena is so in love

Selena Gomez and producer/fiancé Benny Blanco released their collaboration song “Scared of Loving You,” on Feb. 14. This song is one of many on their upcoming joint album “I Said I Love You First” which will be released on March. 21. Due to the fact that this is Gomez’s first song since 2020, one could tell how precious the future album will be with just this song alone. “Scared of Loving You” was very heartfelt being that Gomez and Blanco are an engaged couple.
Unequal Portions

Students in Bakersfield College have noticed variations in food portions they have received at the cafeteria, with some leaving with much more food on their plates than others. This is making students concerned about fairness, and they are starting to question if they are all being served portions of food evenly. “I don’t believe they give fair portions because I see others getting bigger portions than me and it makes me wonder if the food is evenly distributed,” said Uma, a student at BC.

The Levan Center was alive with conversation as students, faculty, and staff gathered for this semester’s first Gadfly Cafe. Hosted by philosophy professor Reggie Williams, the Gadfly Cafe serves as a casual place with a conversational roundtable where people talk about different topics. This month’s topic centered on solidarity, a topic that brought out thoughtful discussions and deep reflections.
