A second virtual student media teleconference of 2024 was hosted by California Community Colleges Chancellor Sonya Christian via Zoom on April 23rd. Chancellor Christian provided updates on important topics such as Black Student Success Week, mental health support, Asian American Hawaiian Pacific Islander Month, upcoming enrollment, student awards, and state budget speculations. Student viewers were also welcomed to ask questions and encouraged to participate in all discussed activities.

Bakersfield College’s Rising Scholars Program presented an event featuring four panelists who shared their stories as formerly incarcerated and incarcerated individuals. The event was initiated by BC’s student government and moderated by Rising Scholar’s Program Director Angelica Perez. All four panelists featured Israel Cota, Peer Mentor. Danielle Harris, student. Shawn Newsom,Associate Professor of History, and Trevor Turner, student.

On Wednesday, April 10 Bakersfield College’s Student Government Association (BCSGA) hosted a Student Town Hall with President Dr. Jerry Fliger. BCSGA Vice President Amanda Anguiano asked a series of questions and represented all of BC by speaking on behalf of all student body regarding academic progress, campus life, and overall educational success. Dr. Fliger shared his educational background in college and related to BC students and their journey in their early college experiences.

After years of anticipation, UFC 300 has arrived. This card featured star power and left audiences with a night to remember. The event took place at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada on April 13, 2024. UFC 300 consisted of eight Prelim matches, three main card matches, and a co-main event featuring Zhang Weili vs. Yan Xiaonan, and the main event showcased Alex Pereira and Jamahal Hill. Pereira defended the light heavyweight title against Hill who has never lost the belt in competition.

Everyone deserves a second chance in life. Our past mistakes do not define us and that’s exactly what Bakersfield College’s Program, “The Rising Scholars,” embodies. April is recognized as Second Chance Month and with that, Rising Scholars are dedicated to providing incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals opportunities for personal and academic growth.

Bakersfield College’s student organization, Free On The Outside (FOTO) hosted a hygiene drive dedicated to helping those less fortunate in the community. The event took place at the roundabout by the Performing Arts Center from March 11th-14th. The FOTO Club is dedicated to supporting previously incarcerated individuals and their allies. They also aide students and their peers in succeeding academically and developing tools to be a productive citizen in the community and in college.

The highly anticipated rematch of Sean “Sugar” O’Malley vs. Marlon “Chito” Vera was held at the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida on March 9, 2024. With O’Malley’s only loss in his career to Vera, fans were left wondering if he would be victorious at avenging his only defeat. With an impressive lineup of fights leading up to the main card, all fighters showed up and showed out for their championship titles. The welterweight bouts consisted of Gilbert Burns vs.

A panel on Latinas in Business and Leadership was hosted via Zoom on March 7th by Bakersfield College’s Women’s History and More Committee (WHAM) and Kern County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (KCHCC). In honor of celebrating Women’s History Month, BC’s WHAM committee has curated a series of events celebrating women throughout history. This was the first event to shed light on women’s accomplishments. It included guest speakers, Nicole Alvarez, BC’s Program Director of Student Life.

BC’s P9 parking lot has been subject to ongoing construction for awhile now. With P9’s limitations, expect to still see construction trucks for just a few more weeks. Executive Director of College Safety, Joseph Grubbs stated, “Construction shouldn’t take too long, 3-4 more weeks.”Once the parking lot is completed, students will have plenty of more parking availability. Students can also expect an alternative way to get to class, since there is only so much parking.

Renegade softball showed out at their latest game at home with a dominating doubleheader against Allan Hancock. These girls finished with a score of 15-0 in game 1 and game 2 finished with a score of 8-3. As soon as those bats clinched the air, BC was off to a great start with game 1 consisting of four runs on five hits. Number six, utility player, Emily Hernandez scored multiple points in game one following them shutting out Hancock with fifteen runs on zero hits.
