SALAMANCA — Mayor Sandra Magiera, members of the Common Council and the city’s Department of Public Works have scheduled clean-up days for June. New this year, the clean-up will be split into two weeks. Items must be on the curb in Wards 1, 2 and 4 by Monday, June 2, and in Wards 3 and 5 by Monday, June 9. Additionally, the council Wednesday accepted the bid by Beichner Waste Services of Sinclairville for $225 per ton to do the pick-up of items.

SALAMANCA — Planning for this year’s Salamanca Summer Fest and Falling Leaves Festival commenced March 24 when committees met for their first meeting. Mayor Sandy Magiera said they had a lot of ideas that first night, and the next meeting will be April 28. “We are hoping for more volunteers who will come that day and take charge of the projects because, without volunteers, we can’t have these events,” she said. Summer Fest will return for the fourth year.

The Salamanca boys track and field team opened their season on Thursday night in a five way meet in Bolivar-Richburg, also taking on Wellsville, Fillmore, and the combined team of Friendship/Scio. “This season is a much anticipated one with a brand-new track facility for the Warriors to showcase their talent and hard work,” coach Michelle Hill said. The Warriors boast the largest team they have had with Hill at the helm with 33 athletes making up the squad.

But not on Friday, the Allegany-Limestone baseball team dug themselves out of a 10-0 hole at home to win 12-11 with a Caleb Strade walk-off double ending it. “These guys have shown they won’t quit,” A-L coach Eric Hemphill said. “Just keep pecking away.”The Gators scored six runs in the sixth inning to close the gap to 11-10. Randolph committed four errors in the sixth to help A-L get back in it.

With special guests, The Mavericks, the concert is sure to be a powerhouse performance that fans of all ages won’t want to miss. With his distinct brand of West Coast honky-tonk, punk and rockabilly, Yoakam kicked off his spring/summer tour Feb. 6. His last album, “Swimmin’ Pools, Movie Stars…,” was released in 2016.
