Tara Fahmie, PhD, the new director of the MMI Department of Severe Behavior, is ready to make a difference. Dr. Fahmie joined MMI in 2019 as the associate director of the department, coming from California State University Northridge in Los Angeles, where she had spent nine years as a faculty member. “It was a big career move for me, because I was coming from a heavy teaching position to a much heavier clinical position here,” she said.

Sarosh Rana, MD, has been named the new chair of the UNMC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, effective Aug. 1. Bradley Britigan, MD, dean of the UNMC College of Medicine, announced the appointment Wednesday. Dr. Rana serves as section chief of maternal-fetal medicine at UChicago Medicine and a professor in the OB/GYN department at the University of Chicago.

The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center will be home to the first of its kind targeted particle therapy treatment in the state. Proton therapy will offer patients new hope, with construction starting the end of this month on a $36 million project at Nebraska Medical Center. Proton therapy provides significant benefits to certain patients. The system focuses an extremely targeted dose of radiation for the treatment of tumors, minimizing damage to surrounding tissues and reducing side effects.

Debra Romberger, MD, was recognized Jan. 29 by the Metro Omaha Medical Society with its Distinguished Service to Medicine Award. Dr. Romberger stepped away from her role as chair of the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine on Jan. 1 to move to the UNMC College of Medicine dean’s office in a special advisory role. She had served as chair since 2015.
