SPASH baseball gets conference win over Merrill

SPASH Panthers baseball took on Merrill at home in a battle of two Wisconsin Valley Conference teams on April 15. Cooper Wendorf got Merrill on the board first in the opening inning, as an RBI single brought in a runner. Willie Washington drove in a runner after an error by Merrill to tie the game at 1-1 in the second inning. The Panthers took the lead as Koy Karaliunas drove in a run on a single with bases loaded in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead.
SPASH soccer gets the WVC win at Marshfield

SPASH girls soccer went on the road on April 17 to take on their Wisconsin Valley Conference rival Marshfield, in a match that saw plenty of action early. Taylor Bushman gave the Panthers an early lead by scoring, a goal at the 9:59 mark after the Marshfield goalkeeper came out to defend her and she made a feet-first sliding goal to make it a 1-0 game.
Manawa softball gets the win over Amherst in conference showdown

Two of the top softball teams in the CWC-East went head-to-head April 17, as the Manawa Wolves traveled to Amherst to take on the Wolves. Manawa’s Ellie Stroesenreuther got her team on the board in the first inning as she drove in a runner from third base as a single went off an Amherst fielder’s glove to bring her to second base as it became a 1-0 game. In the third inning, Stroesenreuther drove in a runner after a single went through the gap in the infield to make it a 2-0 game.

Two local standout athletes receive awards for their excellence in the classroom. The Wisconsin Football Foundation announced the Scholar-Athlete recipients. The state’s chapter of the National Football Foundation, recognizes the best of the best when it comes to outstanding students and outstanding football players. Stevens Point Panthers quarterback Grant Chandonais was a recipient of the accolade.
Walleye run peaks as tournament nears

NEW LONDON –Water temperatures on the Wolf River hovered just above 50 degrees Fahrenheit on April 15. The Wolf River walleye spawn peaks when water temperatures are between 42 and 50 degrees. Raising water temperatures and descending water levels favored anglers as they reported sizable catches of “back run” walleye this past weekend from New London to Gills landing. Many of the fish caught were fresh out of the marshes and headed back down river to the lakes from where they came.

SPASH softball took on D.C. Everest in an early season Wisconsin Valley Conference matchup on April 8. Both teams came into the game undefeated, and looking to put a loss on their opponents’ record. A sacrifice bunt by Addi Peskie drove in a run with bases loaded to give Stevens Point their only lead of the game in the bottom of the first inning to put the Panthers up 1-0.
Waupaca gets conference victory over Little Chute

The Waupaca Comets got a North Eastern Conference win over the Little Chute Mustangs at home on April 8, as they delivered a 3-2 comeback victory. In the top of the third inning, the Mustangs took the lead as Reece Jotun hit into an error to get to first base and bring a runner in for a score to give his team a 1-0 lead. The Mustangs took a 2-0 lead in on the next at-bat in the inning as Ethan Melendrez scored as he stole home plate.
Hortonville falls to Kaukauna in extra innings

A pitcher’s duel in the early innings between two First-Team All-Fox Valley Association hurlers on the mound went into extra innings as Hortonville baseball battled Kaukauna at home on Thursday, April 10. Hortonville Senior Taiven Gass took on Kaukauna junior Bron Schaeffer as both sat down batters in the early innings. Schaeffer delivered the first run for Kaukauna in the third inning as he drove in a runner to make it a 1-0 score.
Schustek stays in charge of board

IOLA – The Village of Iola board president seat was contested for the spring election with incumbent Jennifer Schustek coming out on top April 1. The numbers came in at 279 votes for Schustek and 207 votes for challenger Mike Richberg. Schustek was first elected as board president in 2021, which was the only seat open at the time.
