March is always a special month for Brenau, as the university was founded in 1878 to provide higher education opportunities to women. While the university became co-educational in the early 1970s, The Women’s College remains a cornerstone of Brenau. During February, we acknowledge the contributions and sacrifices Black Americans have made throughout our nation’s history. Brenau has evolved throughout our 146-year history, and today a third of our student population identifies as Black. I credit the courage and resilience of Brenau’s first four Black students – Michelle Gray Haywood, Lois Green Harris, Belinda Harrison Sims, and Natalie Roberts – for paving the way for today’s generation of Black students at Brenau.

All Brenau University offices and campuses will be closed Friday, Jan. 10, and Saturday, Jan. 11, due to a winter storm expected across much of north Georgia and metro Atlanta. Forecasts from the National Weather Service include the potential for cold temperatures, winter precipitation, hazardous driving conditions and power outages. All in-person classes and on-campus events are canceled.

Kayanne Shoffner Massey of Gainesville, Georgia, an alumna and longtime supporter of Brenau University, died Dec. 22 at age 84. The full obituary is available online. “We were saddened to learn of the passing of Kayanne Massey,” Brenau President David L. Barnett, Ph.D., said. “Kayanne kept the name of her alma mater raised up in the community and always spoke highly of Brenau and our students.
