The consignment of used ski gear, and the communal aspect it brings to Whitefish, is going to be a bit farther from Big Mountain next year. For over three decades, consignment shop Runner Up Sports has played a part in Whitefish’s retail and culture by providing a down-to-earth place to sell and exchange used gear for just about anything outside. This summer, owner Chad Colby is moving the shop from Whitefish to Columbia Falls. Now, he’s got both nostalgia and moving labors on his mind.

A whirlwind of energetic tapping feet and the chords of a spunky live band brought the O'Shaughnessy Center to life last weekend as Whitefish’s youth tap ensemble put on their summer show for the 20th year. It was about three years ago when longtime Whitefish residents Charlie Abell and Dewey Hartman were chatting over coffee at the Buffalo Cafe that the idea for a book compiling letters about growing up in Whitefish came about. They and other members of the class of 1958, about 20 to 30 in total of the original 63 members, connected from around the country to remember times past, and to successfully publish their book, “Love Letter to Whitefish, Montana,” in honor of the class's 65th reunion.

Whitefish baseball earns five All-Conference selections

The Bulldogs of Whitefish had a strong showing in this year’s North All-Conference baseball selections, with six players earning postseason recognition for their efforts. Senior Ryan Conklin and junior Tait Orme were both named First Team All-Conference, anchoring Whitefish’s offense and pitching staff throughout the season. Four additional Bulldogs received Second Team honors: seniors Christian Schwaderer and Avery Caton and sophomores Drew Queen and Logan Stewart.

Lower water levels in Whitefish Lake are becoming the new paradigm, according to data collected from the Whitefish Lake Institute. The last decade has seen five of the top 10 lowest lake elevation years on record, based on the institute’s analysis of 68 years of data. “What we’re dealing with is a change in climate resulting in changes to the magnitude and timing of snowmelt,” said Mike Koopal, executive director of Whitefish Lake Institute.
Flathead Lake water level likely will fall below full pool this summer

Flathead Lake will not reach full pool this summer, the agency that operates the SKQ Dam said on Thursday. Current forecasts suggest the lake will reach a maximum level of 2,892.3 feet on June 19, according to a press release issued by Energy Keepers, which manages the dam at the lake’s southern end. Full pool during the summer months is typically 2,893 feet. Energy Keepers blamed unseasonably warm and dry weather for the deficit.

While Witney Workman’s curly red hair is spectacular, it is just one of the many outstanding facets of the Whitefish High School senior. She served as class president her junior and senior years, was on the Student Outreach Committee, and was involved in the Leo Club and the FREEFLOW club. She helped keep the school’s microgreen club going and she was in the National Honor Society.

Two Whitefish High School students in Chris Schwaderer's class won prizes in the VFW Voice of Democracy Essay Contest. The prompt was "Is America Today Our Forefathers' Vision?" Lyla Rudolph placed second at the Post 276 level and third at the district level. Logan Hyland won third place at the Post 276 level. Schwaderer was awarded the VFW Post 276 2025 Teacher of the Year.
