Frequently asked questions
A story earns a spot once several outlets pick it up. Each row is a discrete news event, clustered from every headline written about it across the world's press. "Trending" ranks stories by how fast they're growing right now versus their own baseline over the day; "Biggest" ranks them by total article count.
We continuously ingest news coverage across thousands of outlets, then cluster the headlines into distinct stories and label each one. It's the same data that powers our News Graph, a live map of the last 24 hours of news.
Every hour. Each update is rebuilt from scratch, so the list always reflects the most recent 24-hour window.
It compares a story's recent hourly article rate to its average over the day. ▲ 3.0× means outlets are currently publishing on it three times faster than its 24-hour baseline, so it's a measure of surging right now, not of overall size.
A story gets the badge when it's growing at least twice as fast as its own daily baseline. It's the same signal as the green ▲ number: the badge tells you a story is surging, the number tells you by how much.
That's exactly what it's for. Spot a story that's surging in your space, open it to see every outlet covering it, and use JournoFinder to find and contact the journalists writing about it while the story is still live.
