A new tech stack is taking shape in the auto industry. Tier one suppliers that are still trying to determine where to play risk being crowded out. As software-defined vehicles gain greater traction, the software-defined vehicle market will quadruple from $320 billion to $1.2 trillion by 2035. Some 60% of this market is available to suppliers. To take advantage, suppliers need to align their business models, strategies, and capabilities with the demands of OEM customers.

BCG research found that 70% of US consumers are considering buying an electric vehicle. Can OEMs meet the price and performance needs of these potential customers while still making a profit? Sales growth of electric vehicles (EVs) in 2022 and the first half of 2023 have held pace with 2021. And there was more good news related to EVs throughout 2022. Passage of the Inflation Reduction Act in the US—heavily focused on climate change initiatives—prompted a next wave of investment announcements in EV supply chains globally, including over 500 gigawatt hours of new battery cell manufacturing capacity to be built outside of China, which has dominated EV battery manufacturing.

Near-Term ActionsFreight and logistics companies can adapt to difficult market conditions by making multiple near-term changes that boost revenue and reduce costs. Indeed, many players are already undertaking these moves. Optimize contracts. Monitor volumes against contract terms to ensure that the company isn’t offering discounts to shippers that are not living up to their side of an agreement, and make adjustments accordingly.
