Katelyn Midkiff and her father, Bill, were at their kitchen table when a thunderous noise gave way to chaos. On the morning of Sept. 27, their home was consumed by a landslide in the wake of Hurricane Helene. It was one of more than 2,000 landslides in western North Carolina. "There was a loud sound behind us," Katelyn Midkiff said. "Then it was like we were getting thrown and pulled at the same time." Mud and debris from the landslide trapped them for three hours.

Jessica Tunis doesn't understand why emergency officials have not learned from her mother's death. The Santa Rosa, California, woman said her mother, Linda, did not receive an evacuation alert to warn her the fast-moving Nuns-Tubbs wildfires were raging nearby. The 69-year-old's body was found in the burned rubble of the Journey's End Mobile Home Park in October 2017. Evacuation alerts didn't go out to the neighborhood where Linda Tunis lived, until after she was already dead.

"Pure chaos" is how students at Garfield High School in Seattle described the shooting scene they encountered when they returned to campus from lunch in June. 17-year-old Amarr Murphy-Paine died after he was shot while trying to break up a fight near the school steps. "I mean, people were running that way, this way," Nate Cook recalled. Garfield High School has been the scene of five shootings since 2021.
