“Piece of trash,” “thug,” “classless”—these social media comments described Angel Reese after the 2023 NCAA National Championship game against University of Iowa. Reese, then a Louisiana State University (LSU) women’s basketball player, taunted Iowa’s Caitlin Clark by doing the “you can’t see me” hand gesture and pointing to her finger, indicating to Clark that she would win the national championship ring. LSU ultimately did win, and Reese’s clip didn’t take long to go viral.

The Earth Commons Institute celebrated its first planting party of the season on Sunday, Sep. 8 at the Hoya Harvest Garden, located on the fourth floor Regents patio. Established in 2023, the garden supplies the Hoya Hub food pantry, a resource available to community members experiencing food insecurity, and some of the greens found in Leo O’ Donovan Hall. The garden also serves as a “living lab” to educate students on urban agriculture practices.

Last semester, the Georgetown Earth Commons Institute, the university’s hub for environmental research and advocacy, launched Nature Rx. Nature Rx is an initiative aiming to transform student mental health by encouraging students to spend time in outside. More than 10 years ago, a group of doctors with the National Parks Service in D.C., inspired by the researched benefits of exposure to nature for mental health, launched Nature Rx to alleviate student mental health concerns.

In the wake of the June 2023 Supreme Court ruling ending affirmative action, Georgetown has admitted its first class of applicants in a new college admissions landscape. Without the explicit consideration of students’ racial identities, many students of color were left to navigate how to present this salient detail of their identity in their Georgetown application by themselves. For committed student Karinna Loaz (MSB ’28), a Georgetown acceptance felt almost impossible without affirmative action.

In a panel on Feb. 5, Black female scholars from across the country came together to explore the power of Black women in American politics and their nuanced role as actors in the current political climate. The panel titled “Black Women’s Politics,” was hosted by the Women and Gender Studies, African American Studies, and Government departments to commemorate Black History Month.
