Well, hey there, stranger! It’s been a couple weeks, how are ya? Shoot, we’ve had tornados and hail and torrential rains. That sunshine and calm breeze was sure nice last weekend, wasn’t it? My grass managed to get a haircut and I pulled a few weeds, and my chickens got to stretch their wings. I know they liked that.

A series of storms moved through southern Missouri for several hours Wednesday afternoon and prompted multiple back-to-back tornado warnings for Ozark, Howell, Oregon and Shannon counties. In its aftermath, preliminary local storm reports submitted to the National Weather Service show that, in Howell and Douglas counties, hail was the primary threat, while high winds caused damage in Texas and Shannon counties. Flash flooding was also reported in Howell County.

I am writing this editorial at 9:20 p.m. on Thursday with one contact lens in and the other somehow torn straight down the center, landing it in the trash. It’s getting to be the tail end of a week in which I’ve had to swap my ankle stabilizer from left leg to right and back again because, apparently, my tendonitis thinks the burgeoning spring season marks a swell time to act up.

Posted 3/1/25The 13th annual Heart of the Ozarks Half Marathon, 10K and Mindy's Run took place on Feb. 15, drawing 265 registered participants from 13 states. The event, which raises funds for the West Plains Running Club and youth running programs in Howell County, kicked off on Court Square and finished in front of the Historic Post Office on East Main Street.
