    Cheasarack Chong has been identified by the San Francisco Medical Examiner as the suspect who was killed by police following a Monday standoff after Chong allegedly shot dispensary owner Martin Olive. His family says he had struggled with mental illness for years. Chong, a 34-year-old Fresno native, was the son of Cambodian war refugees. He is survived by his three brothers and two sisters, who lost contact with him over eight years ago.

    Martin Olive was shot on the sidewalk in front of his dispensary near Mission and Ninth Streets on Monday evening. Following a standoff at a nearby building, San Francisco police officers shot and killed the suspect. The identity of the suspect and the reason for the shooting of Olive are not presently known.  Olive, the founder of Vapor Room, was being treated by paramedics for apparent gunshot wounds when SFPD officers arrived on the scene.

    Some 30 percent of San Francisco nonprofits monitored and funded by the city are not adhering to required fiscal rules, according to a Jan. 13 report from the Board of Supervisors Budget and Legislative Analyst. The lack of compliance does not mean the city’s nonprofits are derelict in their duties. It does, however, raise eyebrows at a time when such contracts are under scrutiny following a series of scandals under Mayor London Breed’s administration.

    The San Francisco Police Commission voted unanimously on Wednesday evening to update the protocols for police officers who contact, detain, or arrest people with mental health disorders. Namely, the new policy expands the definition of an individual being a danger to themselves or others to include those with severe substance use disorders.
