We could see a dry summer, adding to our drought conditions Minnesota saw some much-needed rain this week, but not over the ongoing fires in the Northland. Experts say the outlook for summer could spell even more trouble. "We've had some tornadoes, we have had wildfires, we've had some heat, but overall, you know, not super memorable," said Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Climatologist Kenny Blumenfeld, looking back at meteorological spring.

This week's stretch of warm and sunny weather continues into the weekend. High pressure will bring more sunshine and comfy temperatures Saturday, expect seasonable highs back near 70 degrees. A small piece of upper level energy may create a few rouge pop-up showers across northern Minnesota, but it shouldn't be too impactful. Highs will gradually creep up into the low 70s on Sunday and stay there through Memorial Day along with the dry, partly sunny skies.

This week's wet weather has been a welcome sight given the ongoing drought and recent fires in the Northland. The latest drought monitor map, released May 15, still shows almost a quarter of Minnesota in a moderate drought. "We look at hundreds of pieces of data each week," said Brian Fuchs, a climatologist at the National Drought Mitigation Center. Rainfall, soil moisture, and lake levels are just a few of the variables needed to figure out just how bad a drought is.
