    SOMERSET — Two Somerset Area High School student-athletes announced their collegiate destinations, June 3. Senior Zane Hagans will play baseball at Division II Walsh University while Oshyen Knisely will throw javelin at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. Hagans finished with a career .336 batting average, 80 hits, 74 RBIs and 66 runs scored over for seasons for the Golden Eagles. The first baseman found the perfect fit at Walsh.

    CLAYSBURG — Berlin Brothersvalley sophomore Elena Ritchey broke open a 1-run game in bottom of the sixth inning of the District 5-1A championship against Fannett-Metal with a grand slam to left center, leading the Mountaineers to the program's first D5 crown with an 8-6 victory on May 30. "I was a little frustrated because my timing was off the first two at-bats I had. Then they walked me," Ritchey said. "I just tried to stay calm.

    SHIPPENSBURG -- Baylee Sleek, a North Star student-athlete who competes in a co-op with Conemaugh Township, captured PIAA 2A gold in the girls high jump with a new PR of 5 feet, 8 inches. Sleek cleared the height on her first attempt. She upset 6 foot, 4 Quaker Valley junior Mimi Thiero, who came in as the top seed. Adam Ripple is the Daily American sports editor.
