Each Monday, the Daily American will select nominees for Female and Male Athlete of the Week in Somerset County for the spring sports season. Polls will open at 5 a.m. each Monday, and voters will have through 5 p.m. Wednesday to vote. Votes are limited to one per IP address or computer network. SHIPPENSBURG -- Baylee Sleek, a North Star student-athlete who competes in a co-op with Conemaugh Township, captured PIAA 2A gold in the girls high jump with a new PR of 5 feet, 8 inches. Sleek cleared the height on her first attempt. She upset 6 foot, 4 Quaker Valley junior Mimi Thiero, who came in as the top seed. Adam Ripple is the Daily American sports editor. EBENSBURG — Clearfield broke open a tie game in the top of the seventh inning against Somerset in the District 5-9 Class 4A softball sub-regional, striking for four runs. Somerset mounted a valiant comeback in the bottom of the frame, but fell short 5-4, May 19, at Central Cambria High School. "Our girls played hard and didn't quit," said Somerset coach Craig Stinebiser. "It was a solid team effort. The girls battled for seven innings. I am really proud of their effort.
