More than 2,500 people – including dozens of energy workers who face losing their jobs at Harbour Energy – are demanding an end to the windfall tax in oil and gas profits. In an open letter to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer they highlight the “devastating blow” of the firm’s announcement that it intends to cut 250 jobs in Aberdeen. The oil and gas producer, which is the largest in the UK, blamed the decision on the damage caused by the UK Government’s Energy Profits Levy.

Thousands of households across the Highlands and islands could face problems with their heating and hot water supply unless they replace their old-style electricity meters on time. The deadline for households to replace their Radio Teleswitch (RTS) meters is fast approaching with the phase out starting from June 30. This could leave many households across the country, particularly in the rural north and islands, with unreliable heating and hot water – and incorrect bills.

The UK Labour government is facing calls to secure the future of a key North Sea innovation hub based in Aberdeen. The Net Zero Technology Centre was created in 2017 to support the North Sea energy industry and accelerate the transition to net zero. It formed part of the Aberdeen City Region Deal and was backed with £180 million of UK and Scottish government funding – which ends in March 2027. North-east MPs Andrew Bowie and Stephen Flynn want the Treasury to commit beyond that date.

The direct plea – in a joint letter to the SNP Government – comes as training providers and employers grapple with a looming crisis for the future workforce unless opportunities are unlocked in new industries.

RT @justinbowie1997: https://t.co/L8p5H6hgkn EXCLUSIVE: Ellon councillor becomes third Aberdeenshire Tory to defect to Reform

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham today: "Unite fears that the scale of the job losses in the years to come will run in to the tens of thousands unless the UK government changes direction and produces a concrete plan with real jobs for the transition of North Sea workers."

I sincerely hope the UK Government wakes up soon to the stark situation facing potentially tens of thousands of North Sea oil and gas workers over the next few years unless they act fast. Everyone in Aberdeen will know someone working in this industry. It's real for us.
