The number of fire weather days has nearly doubled since the early 1970s across much of the Southwest. Those are days with high temperatures, significant winds and very dry forest conditions. The analysis from the group Climate Central confirms what fire managers have said for years: that fire seasons are longer than ever before. Across northern Arizona, there are now nearly 50 more fire weather days than in 1973.

Employees at Flagstaff’s Bookmans Entertainment Exchange joined staff at two Tucson stores in a one-day strike on Saturday. Since three stores in the Arizona chain unionized last year, contract negotiations between the union and management have dragged on. Union members say management has not taken contract negotiations seriously and they have yet to broach subjects such as wages and benefits.

Last week, the city of Flagstaff relocated an historic house built and owned by May Hicks, known as the “Betsy Ross of Arizona”, who sewed the first Arizona flag in 1911 before statehood. The home was slated for demolition to make way for apartments before the city purchased it. Flagstaff resident Shawn Browning had a front row seat to the move a little before midnight.

Sunny and seasonably warm afternoons are forecast through the remainder of the work week. We turn windy once again this weekend (not nearly as windy as early this week). A spring storm ushers in cool and showery weather Sunday and Monday, possibly a little snow around Flagstaff, stay tuned.

Each winter, state and federal wildlife biologists crisscross Arizona and New Mexico in helicopters, planes and trucks as they capture and count endangered Mexican gray wolves. Their population has grown for nine years, but conservation groups say the program is running out of time to address important genetic challenges. It’s an unusually warm January day when state wolf technician Annie Norland and state veterinarian Anne Justice-Allen huddle within a single-wide outside of Alpine, Arizona.
