U.S. citizens were more than twice as likely to be charged with a crime in Harris County in 2023 than adults who don’t hold U.S. citizenship, according to an exclusive data analysis by the Houston Landing. The analysis, based on the most recent data on the county’s adult population and criminal charges, shows that U.S. citizens have been more likely to be charged with a crime in Harris County since at least 2015, the earliest data collected by the Landing through public records law.

Stalled trains have clogged tracks near Houston ISD schools on hundreds of occasions in the past year, adding danger to the commutes of thousands of students and pushing some children to climb through stopped cars, a Houston Landing investigation shows. A Landing analysis of Federal Railroad Administration records shows local residents regularly report that trains operated by the railway company Union Pacific block roads around schools during student drop-off and pickup times.

For other local government agencies, however, the public comment process is not such a cakewalk — for example, those wishing to speak at Tomball ISD school board meetings must submit an online form during a five hour window the morning of the meeting.

On election day last month, 29-year-old Shannah Becker from Pasadena showed up at a polling location to cast her ballot, but was turned away. Although she had submitted her voter registration application in early October, she mailed it in late, one day past the Oct. 7 deadline. “I definitely felt very disappointed,” Becker said.
