An inmate at Dixon Correctional Institute beat his cellmate unconscious and raped him, leaving the victim on a ventilator for weeks, the East Feliciana Sheriff's office said. Tedrick Carter Jr., 20, was booked last week into the East Feliciana Parish Jail on charges of first-degree attempted murder and first-degree rape. The attack allegedly occurred about 6:45 p.m. on April 30 at Dixon, a state prison in Jackson.

A Baton Rouge police officer and an accompanying passenger were hospitalized Monday morning after the BRPD patrol vehicle caught fire following a collision. BRPD Cpl. Saundra Watts said the incident occurred around 8 a.m. at the intersection of East Harrison Street and Thomas Delpit Drive. Watts said another car pulled in front of the police vehicle, causing a crash that sparked a small fire beneath the patrol car.
