Water levels in Lake Simcoe are higher than average for this time of year, leading to increased chances of flooding, the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority reports. A pair of coalitions is urging the province to take action to prevent salt pollution from impacting freshwater ecosystems. Ward 3 Coun. Dave Neeson, nicknamed the “Lake Simcoe Avenger” due to his regular support of non-profits’ efforts to clean up Lake Simcoe, helped take the motion, brought forward by the Rescue Lake Simcoe Coalition and the Ontario Salt Pollution Coalition, to council April 2 and asked his colleagues for their support. Residents are asked to sweep unwanted sand from their driveways and sidewalks over the curb and onto the edge of the road for removal by the street sweeper.

Clean up efforts are still underway in Georgina after a weekend ice storm forced road and town park closures and downed power lines, leaving hundreds without lights and heat. Environment Canada issued a freezing rain warning for Georgina and York Region for the night of March 29, continuing into Sunday morning, warning of possible ice amounts of five to 10 mm.
