As reported by several media outlets and confirmed by SAP CEO, Christian Klein, during its Q4 2024 earnings call, SAP will offer an additional 3 years of support for some on-premises ERP customers beyond the existing extended maintenance support of 2030. This news came as a surprise for many ERP customers globally who have been struggling to plan and complete their ECC to S/4HANA migrations under the RISE with SAP offering before end of 2027, which is the current mainstream maintenance end date.

SAP reported better-than-expected Q4 2024 financial results and raised its full-year operating profit forecast as demand for artificial-intelligence systems continues. On top of beating expectations, SAP said it now expects 2025 operating profit to be between €10.3 billion to €10.6 billion, above previous estimates of approximately €10 billion. Its current cloud backlog of €18.08 billion is up 32%. Cloud revenue is up 27% to €4.71 billion and Cloud ERP Suite revenue is up 35% to €3.95 billion.

In a surprising turn of events for ERP customers globally, as part of its Q3 2024 financial results, ServiceNow announced a new expanded partnership with one of the most popular third-party software support providers, Rimini Street. Both the companies are creating a new enterprise software model which will allow existing on-premises ERP systems and other enterprise applications to add new AI innovations using ServiceNow’s AI platform.

Technical debt is a growing issue for many organizations. Forrester’s Q2 2024 Tech Pulse Survey revealed that only 21% of US IT decision-makers report no significant technical debt. In contrast, 49% face moderate levels, and an alarming 30% struggle with high or critical debt. This growing burden—caused by past decisions, time constraints, or external pressures—competes with the ability to pursue new initiatives. Like financial debt, tech debt accrues interest too.
