A new Memorial Day tradition began this weekend at John Knox Village, where volunteers raised about 100 American flags outside the community’s recently built Veterans Memorial. Jim Smith, a Navy veteran and volunteer, helped set up the display Sunday. “It’s always been a big thing in my family,” Smith said.

A Kansas hospital program that recycles and redistributes used hearing aids has reached a major milestone, fitting its 1,000th patient: 79-year-old Richard Thompson of Olathe. Thompson, who has lived with hearing loss for more than three decades, said the condition had gradually worsened to the point where he struggled to hold conversations. “First it was barely noticeable, and then it finally ended up to where I couldn't get in a conversation. I couldn't understand what was going on,” he said.

Lake Quivira returned to normal Sunday as people lined the shores and launched their boats, less than 24 hours after a deadly boating accident. Police say one person died around 6 p.m. Saturday following a boating incident on the lake. According to the mayor, first responders began searching for the missing boat operator shortly after the accident. The body was recovered about an hour later.
