A new behavioral health center for children and adolescents — the first of its kind on the East End — is set to open in Riverhead next month. South Oaks Hospital, part of the Northwell Health system, celebrated the opening of the new facility at 877 East Main Street during a ribbon-cutting ceremony last week. The behavioral health center will offer individual therapy, family therapy, group therapy and medication management among its services, according to a Northwell Health press release.

The Riverhead Fire District is asking voters to approve $4.5 million in bonds to fund the purchase of a new ladder truck and upgrades to its communications equipment during a special election on Tuesday. The proposal includes two separate ballot measures: one for $3 million to purchase the new ladder truck, and another for $1.5 million to replace and upgrade the district’s radio communications system.

The man arrested last week for allegedly stabbing a bus passenger has been arrested for stabbing a man in a Riverhead deli earlier that same day, Riverhead Police said this afternoon. Rene Alexander Elias Chaj, 23, of Mastic, was identified as the suspect in an assault at the Time to Eat Deli at 123 West Main Street in Riverhead on May 2 — shortly before he was arrested for allegedly stabbing a passenger on a Suffolk County Transit bus in Riverside, according to a police press release.

The Riverhead Town Board Tuesday scheduled a public hearing on a special permit and site plan application for the first satellite Earth station in Riverhead. A New Jersey-based telecommunications firm is seeking approval for the construction of 40 satellite Earth station antennas in a fenced compound within the Calverton Enterprise Park.
