    The Riverhead community celebrated Juneteenth on Thursday with food, dance and fun at the Butterfly Effect Project’s campus on Main Road in Jamesport. Juneteenth — also known as Freedom Day and Jubilee Day — marks the date of June 19, 1865 when Union Army Major General Gordon Granger led troops into Galveston, Texas, to inform the people of Texas that slaves were freed by the Emancipation Proclamation.

    Pulaski Street Intermediate School celebrated Juneteenth on Wednesday by announcing the winners of its annual essay contest for fifth-graders. “Today, we gather to celebrate Juneteenth, a day that reminds us of the importance of freedom, equality and the hope for a better future,” principal Laura Arcuri said. “I want to give a big thank you to all the students who participated and submitted their work.” Students were asked to write in celebration of Juneteenth in poetry or prose.

    Riverhead officials unveiled a new historic marker today commemorating one of the town’s oldest cemeteries, the final resting place of members of Riverhead’s founding families and soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary War. The burial ground, also known as the Riverhead Village Cemetery, is located on the grounds of the Riverhead United Methodist Church on East Main Street.
