A five-day carnival could come to Calverton this summer — and possibly many summers to come — if Riverhead Town gives it the green light. Dreamland Amusements is proposing to stage the carnival from June 25-29 on an unused grassland, between Middle Country Road and Peconic Ice Rinks, at Veterans Memorial Park.

A divided Riverhead Town Board on Tuesday took the first step toward selling the historic and blighted Vail-Leavitt Music Hall to The Jazz Loft. The Town Board passed a resolution 3-2 authorizing the town attorney “to take all such actions as may be necessary and appropriate to consummate such sale” of the building to The Jazz Loft. The nonprofit organization previously restored a historic building in Stony Brook built in the 1770s and turned it into a performance venue and music museum.

The Riverhead Board of Education voted unanimously on Wednesday to send a $211 million budget for next school year to district voters for approval. The proposal for the 2025-2026 fiscal year, which starts July 1, would increase expenditures by nearly $10 million, or roughly 5% over the current budget.

The Long Island Science Center presented revised plans for its museum on the town square Thursday, in a bid to convince the Riverhead Town Board not to take its property using eminent domain. The presentation by the science center’s architects and its development consultant at the Town Board work session made town officials optimistic about plans for developing the blighted building at 111 East Main Street, which sits on the west side of the town square.
