Stuart Skinner recorded an 18-save shutout, and Connor McDavid recorded his 74th assist of the season as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the San Jose Sharks 3-0 in the final game of the campaign for both teams. The game was San Jose’s first since captain Logan Couture announced the end of his playing career one day prior. The Sharks honored him during the game, and Oilers players made a point to shake hands with him after the contest concluded.

The San Jose Sharks are in a rough stretch, and not only because they’ve lost their last 10 games. A brutal series of injuries has made the roster incredibly thin, forcing them to look deep within their organization to find players who can fill out the lineup. This has made it increasingly difficult for the team to conclude the season on a positive note, with one game remaining. But the end of the season couldn’t come at a better time.

Jake DeBrusk scored with 18 seconds remaining in overtime as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the San Jose Sharks 2-1 for their third win in four games. Canucks goalie Nikita Tolopilo, making his NHL debut, made 15 saves to earn his first career win. San Jose Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic has undergone many changes in his career. Over time, he went from a promising young blueliner to a top-pair defenseman to one of the NHL’s most overpriced players. In that same time frame, the Sharks themselves took a similar journey, starting as an upstart playoff team before becoming true contenders, then falling to the bottom of the league in part due to bad contracts.

Thanks in part to some of their most tradable players, the #sjsharks have won two straight games. They might be their last wins with the current roster, and I think the players realize it too. My column for @TheHockeyWriter: https://t.co/2VMneAvdqx

The NHL trade deadline is a week away. But the league would be better off if it had already happened. My latest for @TheHockeyWriter: https://t.co/T8EwP340KF
