A rescuer has spoken of his relief after he helped get a woman out of the river during the recent floods. Paul Sauntson, 67, helped Colin McGarva pull the woman from the River Severn in Worcester on New Year’s Day at about 09:00 GMT. He had seen Mr McGarva throw a lifebuoy ring into the water at Sabrina Bridge and rushed over to help. After Mr McGarva jumped in the water, Mr Sauntson held onto the rope attached to the ring and hauled them both back to dry land.

An assistance dog who saved her owner from a house fire has been honoured. Melody Chen, a student at Reaseheath College in Nantwich, began to feel unwell and lost consciousness while she was heating oil in a frying pan. The oil burst into flames but her medical alert dog Mia managed to bring her round before guiding her to safety, Ms Chen said. The German shepherd was honoured at this year's Animal Star Awards.

Flood barriers have been set up next to a Worcestershire river because of concerns over rising water levels. The Environment Agency confirmed it was erecting them at the River Severn on Severn Side, Bewdley, following heavy rainfall. Further rain was forecast over the next few days, Barry Killner, from the agency, said on X, external. A flood alert was issued for the river in Bewdley which said flooding was expected to affect low-lying land.
