AUGUSTA — The U.S. Department of Education has escalated enforcement against the stateof Maine over its stance on transgender athletes participating in female sports. On March 31, the Office for Civil Rights warned several states — including Maine — that they had 10 days to comply with President Donald Trump’s executive order aimed at barring transgender athletes from female sports, or face enforcement from the U.S. Department of Justice.
