ELLSWORTH — During the pandemic, Ruth Foster, grande dame of Ellsworth, held court in the garage of her historic home on State Street. In her 90s and recently retired (well, mostly), Foster was prepared to take precautions but not to forgo social life entirely. She put in seating and added decorations from her former Main Street children’s shop. The open-air sitting area was tasteful and practical with a touch of whimsy. Much like Foster.

ELLSWORTH — Since its first issue rolled off the press twenty-five years ago, the Mount Desert Islander has been printed in Ellsworth. That stops this June. Instead, the Islander and its sister papers, The Ellsworth American and Camden-based Midcoast Villager, will be printed in South Portland. The closure of the press and mail rooms will affect approximately 10 full- and part-time employees, according to Publisher Chris Crockett.
