Brisbane singer Dami Im is looking forward to performing in front of Eurovision fans again. The last time she fronted them was in Stockholm, Sweden, with the song Sound of Silence, which placed second in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016. She had achieved the highest Eurovision Song Context score ever for Australia.

Ahluwalia shines a light on the multiculturalism of his heritage, Punjabi Sikh on his father’s side and Irish Catholic on his mother’s, tracking through both his own journey and that of his family. Along the way he comes to terms with his identity and dismantles the mask of ego that most MCs can get caught wearing.

He’s been silent during the last few years, so it was interesting to hear a new work by Graeme Koehne. His Bittersweet Symphony is an Adelaide Symphony Orchestra Commission, and revealed itself as a smart, sleek and impressive score – his most polished to date.

Flight, which had its Australian premiere at the 2006 Adelaide Festival, is an opera in three acts originally commissioned by Glyndebourne Opera with music by composer Jonathan Dove. The libretto, by English writer April De Angelis, was inspired in part by the true story of Iranian refugee Mehran Karimi Nasseri, who lived at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris for 18 years after being left in limbo when he arrived there with no passport or identification papers.

Earlier this year ABC Classic released a recording of my Stradella Suite, a 30-minute, six-movement suite for stradella piano accordion trio that it had commissioned as part of the ABC’s 2022 Composer Commissioning Fund. To the best of my knowledge this is a notable work in that it is Australia’s first serious art music composition for such an ensemble.

With the imminent arrival of the King and the Queen to our shores, republicans have retreated to their favourite talking point: the cost of the royal visit. It is the case that the Australian Government, by way of the taxpayer, is footing the bill for Their Majesties’ brief stints in Sydney and Canberra. This fact is unremarkable. The Australian Government pays similar bills for all visiting international dignitaries, so why should our Crown be the one that gets snubbed?

There were two films on the big screen that brought great attention to the realm of Western art music in 2023 – Tár and Maestro. And now both films are being viewed regularly on streaming service Netflix. Ultimately, I do not care for either. Both films left me feeling short-changed.
