Le Mars faces North, West in baseball doubleheaders

LE MARS — The Le Mars Community baseball team hosted Sioux City North for a Missouri River Activities Conference doubleheader on Tuesday. The Bulldogs led for part of Game 1, but ended up falling by a 7-4 final score. North scored a run in the top of the first inning, but the Bulldogs answered in the bottom of the inning. Brett McInnis drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the score. Keegan Gengler gave the Bulldogs the lead with an RBI on a fielder’s choice.
Akron-Westfield picks up sweep over Harris-Lake Park

AKRON — The Akron-Westfield softball team won 6-1 over Harris-Lake Park in War Eagle Conference action at Bob Tucker Field on Monday. Tied 1-1 after two innings, the Class 1A No. 14 Westerners scored three runs in the third inning and two runs in the fourth to pick up a win in a weather-shortened game. Brylie Johnson and Lainey Schuknecht both drove in a pair of runs for the Westerners. Schuknecht had a single and double as she finished 2-for-2 with a sacrifice.
RSM earns wins over H-M-S, South O’Brien

REMSEN — The Remsen St. Mary’s softball team won 10-0 in four innings on Monday in War Eagle Conference action at Sunrise Park. RSM jumped out to an 8-0 lead after an inning and scored two runs in the fourth inning to end the game early. Hallie Bunkers opened the scoring with an RBI triple and she came home on a base hit from Josie Schwickerath. The next run scored on an error while Brielle Schorg hit an RBI single and Chloe Homan got a two-run double to stretch the lead to 6-0.
Le Mars strikes early, lightning strikes late against North

LE MARS — The Le Mars Community softball team struck early against Sioux City North on Tuesday afternoon in Missouri River Activities Conference action, but it was lightning striking late as the doubleheader wasn’t able to be completed. The Bulldogs did take Game 1 by a 7-4 score. Leading off the batting order for the team in the bottom of the first inning was Natalie Vanderloo, who hit a home run to put the Bulldogs in front.
Gehlen takes two from Trinity Christian

LE MARS — The Gehlen Catholic baseball team won 11-5 over Trinity Christian in War Eagle Conference action Monday at the Riverview Complex. Tied 5-5 after five innings, the Jays scored six runs in the sixth inning to pull away for the win. Brayden Horkey led the Jays with a 3-for-3 game at the plate as he hit three singles and also reached via walk. He drove in four runs. Mason Small and Dane Lehman both had two hits and drove in a pair of runs.
Le Mars soccer players earn postseason recognition

LE MARS — Members of the Le Mars Community soccer teams earned postseason recognition by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association. Jovany Kabongo, a senior forward for the Le Mars boys, earned Second Team All-State honors. Kabongo scored 33 goals this season for Le Mars, the sixth-most among players across the state this season. He added six assists. Kabongo was also selected to the West Team for the Senior Showcase All-Star Game on June 14 in Des Moines.
MMCRU baseball shuts out West Sioux

HAWARDEN — MMCRU picked up a 6-0 win over West Sioux in War Eagle Conference baseball action Monday. The Royals scored one run in the top of the first inning. The team tacked on lone runs in the fifth and sixth before tacking on three more runs in the seventh. Brandon Dreckman, Eli Schlenger, Mason Grage and Parker Glassmaker all had two hits for the Royals. Schlenger, Josh Peterson and Gavin Poeckes picked up RBIs for the team.
Hinton wins games over South O’Brien, Trinity Christian

HINTON — The Hinton softball team won 6-4 over South O’Brien in War Eagle Conference action Monday. The Class 2A No. 12 Blackhawks scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 4-4 tie. “The Wolverines came to play softball,” Hinton head coach Jennifer Jacobs-List said. “Their hits found the short gaps and we did not bring the energy out of the gate. Defensively, on a positive note, we were finally error free.

The Bulldogs opened with a 4-1 win over the Class 2A No. 12-ranked Blackhawks. “I knew that they were going to be a pretty salty ball team. They’re a good little team. She does a great job at Hinton coaching those guys. I knew that we were going to have to come out right away.

LE MARS — The Le Mars Community softball team won both games of a Missouri River Activities Conference doubleheader Thursday against Bishop Heelan. The team took Game 1 by a 3-2 score. Kinnick Leusink and Kynlee Schmidt both went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Bulldogs. Brenna Leraas pitched the win with nine strikeouts in seven innings. She gave up two runs on four hits and a walk. Le Mars won Game 2 by a score of 8-5.
