Eighteen years ago, the adopted April 2 to observe World Autism Awareness Day to promote understanding about autism. First-year fashion studies major Louis Sampson said this day is important to recognize because “we’re not even a minority, we’re a majority.”About 1 in 36 children in the United States are diagnosed with autism by the age of 8, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

The college leadership will present the overhaul of Columbia’s programs to the Board of Trustees on Dec. 16 instead of early next year, moving up the timeline for when the board will consider the financial implications of merging and eliminating majors. The board had been set to consider the program changes in February 2025 after the spring semester started. Starting next fall, Columbia will accept DEI course transfers from other institutions. Students must complete six credits of DEI courses to graduate. Currently, only courses taken at Columbia are eligible to fulfill the requirement. The Faculty Senate passed the measure unanimously at its meeting on Friday, Nov. 1. The college will review the process annually.

November 5, 2024 Columbia Votes led more than a dozen students to the Voter Super Center at 191 N. Clark St. to cast their vote on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Teddi Karnes, voter genius and sophomore film and television major, said the “Party To The Polls” event sponsored by Columbia Votes was aimed at helping first-time voters. “There are a lot of first-time voters and a lot of first-time voters who are now voting in a presidential election, which is a really big deal,” Karnes said.

November 4, 2024 Presidential candidates Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are using different advertising methods to target different demographics for their votes. According to Thomas Eslinger, assistant professor of instruction in the School of Business and Entrepreneurship, Harris and Trump are pulling in target demographics by using tactics to cater to voters’ current beliefs, along with proposing new ideas that may persuade them.

October 30, 2024 One year ago today marked the start of Columbia’s historic part-time faculty union strike, which lasted seven weeks and was the longest adjunct faculty strike in U.S. history before it ended Dec. 17. In the year since, the college has undergone sweeping administrative restructuring and budget cuts. Over the summer, the college laid off 70 staff members, including four therapists in the Counseling Center, four librarians, two academic advisors and nine staff in the tutoring center.

October 10, 2024 The college does not currently accept DEI course credits from transfer students who come from previous institutions, but the Faculty Senate is considering a measure that would allow students to get credit. In order to graduate from the college, students must fulfill six required credits through DEI courses offered through Columbia. Right now, only courses taken at Columbia count. The college reduced its core requirements from 42 credits to 30, starting this fall.

When flyers were posted this month throughout the 623 S. Wabash building promoting a “Pancake Breakfast” for the School of Visual Arts, several students noticed that it was created using artificial intelligence. Gus Kelsey, a senior illustration major and president of the Illustration Student Group, said they first saw the AI-generated poster on Sept. 12, while stepping off the elevator that morning.
