    May 8, 2025 Columbia has many safety programs throughout the campus, including the very recognizable blue light phones, but one of the services that they provide often goes overlooked. Many students are not aware of the more than 100 red phones that connect directly to campus security. As Ronald Sodini, the associate vice president of Campus Safety and Security, told the Chronicle, when new students go to orientation, they are shown a slide about the system.

    Senior Charlesa Thompson, a user experience and interaction design major, struggled to gain traction from her peers after pitching the creation of a textured hair care app in one of her classes. It wasn’t until enrolling in the “Digital Design III: Experience” course taught by Becky Luther, a professor in the School of Design, that Thompson found the team and the support to bring Braid to life.

    More than half of the courses the college is offering this summer are online and asynchronous, a shift from previous years when more in-person options were available. A Chronicle review of summer courses found that of 31 courses, 19 are asynchronous and one that is cross-listed with an online master’s program is web synchronous. The rest are being held in person. Study abroad, music lessons, internships and directed and independent study courses were excluded from the count.

    Shantay Bolton, an experienced college administrator who most recently was executive vice president and chief business officer of Georgia Institute of Technology, will be Columbia’s new president and CEO. She starts the position on July 1. This is a monumental moment for the college. Bolton is the first woman president in nearly 90 years and the first ever woman of color to lead the college.
