My very first solo trip to Pennsylvania was to interview for The Express-Times’ “flex desk.” I followed copy chief Ashleigh Graf up what I now know was the fancy stairwell into the largest newsroom I’d ever visited. I was hired and welcomed by a staff that delighted in explaining the traditions and quirks of the Lehigh Valley: Musikfest (yes, with a k); Phillipsburg (double l, no h -- this isn’t Pittsburgh); Christkindlmarkt (it’s best to sound it out).
