Last month, President Donald Trump threatened to impose 200% tariffs on all wines coming from the European Union. After a tense few weeks, the president changed course last week to levy a 20% tariff on all EU goods, including wine. Though it’s much lower than the high percentage initially proposed, many in the U.S. wine sector are bracing for a financial hit. That includes Damien Carney, the owner of Avinage wine shop in Petaluma, California.

More and more people are flocking to Texas — making it one of the fastest growing states in the country. The population explosion also means an increase in the demand for water. Take West Odessa — many residents don’t have running water and this is in a region where the multi-billion dollar oil industry is booming. But figuring out how to pay for new infrastructure to get water lines where they need to be is a big problem.

About an hour outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, construction is underway for a brand-new Newton-Conover High School. Superintendent Aron Gabriel said it will serve both small towns, which are just off the interstate in rural area. Gabriel is optimistic that the new building, with its spacious classrooms and new athletic facilities, will attract new students. In the five years it took to plan and build this school, student enrollment in this small district has dropped 11%.

Late last year, Eric Hamm was feeling uneasy about his job security. He was working as a maintenance mechanic at Big Bend National Park in southwest Texas and aware of President Donald Trump’s plans to make big federal budget cuts. So, he applied to an opening for a city forester in Cortez, Colorado. In January, he was offered the job. “I actually turned it down,” Hamm said.

Mexico is under pressure these days to keep illegal drugs and migrants from crossing into the United States. But the country is facing pressure to crackdown on another front: the trade in smuggled and counterfeit products. Late last fall, these pressures came to a head when police in Mexico City descended on a 16-story building and confiscated what they said were 19 tons of contraband mostly from China, including Hello Kitty knock-offs.

This week is heavy here @NPR. The layoffs become real and we will lose colleagues who work so hard to put on our programming everyday. We don't know who will go but we know that everyone who is here now... we need them. Tough days ahead.
