After nearly three decades Next Adventure, a mainstay in Portland’s outdoor community, is closing its doors. The used and new outdoor gear shop was started in 1997 by childhood friends Deek Heykamp and Bryan Knudsen, and grew into multiple locations around the Portland metro area.

The agency was targeted by hackers who said they stole more than a million files — and who tried to charge DEQ about $2.5 million worth of Bitcoin to get that data back. Earlier this year, a new study was published with a groundbreaking discovery from the John Day Fossil Beds Monument in central and eastern Oregon. While the park is mostly known for what are commonly called body fossils, things like teeth or bones, this discovery was different. Conner Bennett led the team that uncovered the fossilized footprints of prehistoric birds, lizards, and mammals, which were published in the academic journal Paleontologia Electronica.
