The Emoluments Clause (Article I, Section 9, Clause 8 of the Constitution) prohibits individuals holding "any Office of Profit or Trust under them" from accepting gifts, emoluments (benefits, payments, etc.), offices, or titles from foreign states without the consent of Congress.
